Maryland added over 38,000 total jobs in 2024, new data shows

BALTIMORE, MD (January 28, 2024) – Maryland added 38,400 jobs in 2024 (27,300 in the private sector) and employment grew at a 1.4 percent growth rate, according to preliminary end-of-year employment estimates released today by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This data, based on surveys of employers, also notes that Maryland’s total employment grew by 200 jobs in December. 

In December, Maryland’s labor force participation rate remained constant at 65.6 percent, well above the national average of 62.5 percent. Maryland’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.1 percent as well last month. Maryland’s unemployment rate remains one of the lowest in the nation and well below the national rate of 4.1 percent.

Maryland public airports generate $1.4 billion

Maryland’s nearly three dozen public-use airports generated $1.4 billion in economic activity last year, according to a recent report from the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA).

The 33 airports examined in the report stretch from the Garrett County Airport in Western Maryland to the Ocean City Municipal Airport in Worcester County, and from the Claremont Airport in Cecil County to the Maryland Airport in Charles County. The study did not include BWI Airport, which compiles its own statewide economic impact report.

Baltimore-To-Washington Maglev Train Project Still In Progress

The developer of a massive 33-mile, $20 billion high-speed train line connectingshington, D.C., said on Thursday that plans remain active as key environmental and engineering studies continue from Baltimore to WA.

Bill Scott, president of Northeast Maglev LLC, told a group of Baltimore business leaders that plans for magnetic levitating trains, or maglev, have been progressing for However, public debate and discussion over building the system seem the past year. to have cooled following the settlement of a lawsuit over land rights in Westport, where the train line would traverse.

Developer Buys Prince George’s County Site Planned For 245 Units

The opening of Maryland’s Purple Line has been delayed for years, but it is still spurring interest from developers to build around its stations.

Minneapolis-based Dominium Apartments last week closed on its acquisition of 7011 Chesapeake Road in Hyattsville for $4M. It plans to build 245 affordable rental units restricted to those who earn up to 60% of the area median income.

Dominium has had the site under contract for more than a year, and it received preliminary plan approval from Prince George’s County in June. The project, branded as The Flats at Glenridge Station, is the company’s first in the D.C. market.

Compass Coffee opens first Maryland shop in College Park

Compass Coffee has opened a new shop by the University of Maryland campus, its first in the state as the District-based chain expands its footprint across Greater Washington.

The new spot, which opened this weekend, is a roughly 1,400-square-foot space at the base of the Hub College Park, a 477-unit student housing development that delivered in 2023.  The space was previously operated as a student-run coffee shop, New Here Coffee, at 4210 Knox Road.

Walk-in clinic chain Patient First will open its newest D.C.-area location in Capitol Heights, Maryland, on Jan. 30.

State Approves $75 Million Contract For Firms To Manage Key Bridge Reconstruction

The Board of Public Works approved a $75 million contract Wednesday to hire three firms that will oversee construction management services on the Francis Scott Key Bridge, as the replacement project gets under way in earnest this spring.

The companies, a consortium calling itself Bridging Maryland Partnership, will be responsible for planning, engineering, surveying, construction management and more.

Adventist HealthCare Names Fort Washington Hospital’s Next Leader

Adventist HealthCare has identified the next leader of its Fort Washington Medical Center, after Eunmee Shim stepped out of the role at the end of December.

The Gaithersburg health system said Tuesday it has named Daffodil Baez, an executive already within the organization, as the southern Prince George’s County hospital’s president. She is expected to assume the role within the next few weeks.
