Prince George's County Economic Development Corporation Releases Analysis of County's Economic Recovery from COVID-19 Pandemic

Prince George's County Economic Development Corporation Releases Analysis of County's Economic Recovery from COVID-19 Pandemic

Largo, MD – The Prince George's County Economic Development Corporation (PGCEDC) has released a comprehensive analysis detailing the county's exceptional economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic. Conducted by Policy Navigators, LLC, the report highlights Prince George's County as one of Maryland's top-performing jurisdictions for job growth, demonstrating resilience and leadership during a challenging economic period.

The analysis compared job creation numbers in Prince George's County to eight other jurisdictions in Maryland and the state as a whole. It examined data spanning the pre-pandemic years, the initial economic impacts of COVID-19, and the subsequent recovery period.

Pre-Pandemic Leadership in Job Growth

From 2011 to 2021, Prince George's County led Maryland counties in job creation, adding 55,182 jobs during the decade. This remarkable growth placed the county ahead of Anne Arundel County by nearly 2,000 jobs, with much of the expansion driven by the Fort Meade area and related developments. The report underscores Prince George's County's strong pre-pandemic economic trajectory as a foundation for its post-pandemic recovery.

Disproportionate Impact of COVID-19

The pandemic's onset in March 2020 brought widespread economic disruptions. Businesses, schools, and essential services faced closures, and minority- and women-owned businesses experienced disproportionate challenges. As a jurisdiction with a high concentration of minority- and women-owned enterprises, Prince George's County felt these impacts acutely, recording significant job losses during the pandemic's peak.

Recovery and Reopening

Despite the challenges, Prince George's County demonstrated remarkable resilience. While the broader economy took until 2022 to return to pre-pandemic levels, the county outpaced its Maryland counterparts in job growth during the recovery phase. By May 2022, as restrictions eased and economic conditions normalized, Prince George's County had created more jobs over two years than any other jurisdiction in the state.

A Stronger Future for Prince George's County

The report concludes that Prince George's County not only weathered the economic storm of COVID-19 but also emerged as a model of recovery and growth. Despite trailing only Montgomery County in total job losses during the pandemic, Prince George's County rebounded with sustained job creation, setting the pace for economic recovery across Maryland.

The findings reinforce Prince George's County's status as a leader in job growth and economic resilience, demonstrating the community's ability to overcome adversity and adapt to new economic realities.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: **A Legacy of Growth: David Iannucci Concludes Historic Chapter in Prince George's County Economic Development**

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

**A Legacy of Growth: David Iannucci Concludes Historic Chapter in Prince George's County Economic Development**

LARGO, MD - Prince George's County Economic Development Corporation (PGCEDC) today announces the retirement of President and CEO David S. Iannucci, marking the conclusion of an extraordinary career spanning more than four decades in economic development and public service. Under Iannucci's visionary leadership, Prince George's County has experienced unprecedented economic growth and transformation, including a 10-year span leading all Maryland Counties in job growth and the historic successful bid to relocate the FBI headquarters to Greenbelt, Maryland.

"David Iannucci's impact on Prince George's County's economic landscape has been nothing short of remarkable," said Orlan Johnson, Chair of the PGCEDC Board of Directors. "His strategic vision and unwavering dedication have positioned our County as the premier business destination in the Maryland-DC region. David has been a leader in the economic development arena for the State of Maryland as well as in many major jurisdictions in the state, so we were fortunate to have him at the helm here in Prince George's County."

"Two of the things I most appreciate about David is the vast experience he has brought to the EDC and his incredible understanding of economic development," said Marva Jo Camp, Esq., Vice Chair of the EDC Board of Directors. "His deep knowledge of both policy and practice, combined with his strategic vision and ability to navigate complex economic landscapes has been instrumental in positioning Prince George's County as a premier business destination."

Working with focused leadership from the County Executive and Congressional Delegation, Iannucci's dedication culminated in one of the region's most significant economic development achievements: securing the new FBI headquarters in Greenbelt, Maryland. This landmark victory, years in the making, exemplifies Iannucci's patient, strategic approach to economic development and his ability to bring transformative projects to fruition.

Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks has worked closely with Iannucci throughout this journey. "It is an honor to acknowledge and congratulate Mr. Iannucci on his retirement. Over the course of his remarkable career, David has left an indelible mark on our community, serving as a steadfast leader and tireless advocate for economic development in our County. He has driven transformative projects that have reshaped our community, including playing a pivotal role in bringing the FBI's new headquarters to Prince George's County. His leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment have been instrumental in creating opportunities for our residents, fostering innovation, and laying the foundation for a brighter economic future. David's impact will be felt for generations to come, and we are deeply grateful for his dedicated service. On behalf of the residents of Prince George's County, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to David for his outstanding contributions and wish him the very best in this next chapter of his life. His legacy will always be a part of our County's story."

During his tenure, Iannucci led the implementation of the $50 million Economic Development Incentive Fund into a powerful engine for growth, leveraging over $1.1 billion in private sector investments. But beyond the impressive numbers, his impact is best measured in the thousands of Prince George's County residents who now work in the businesses that grew and expanded because of County support.

As Assistant Deputy Chief Administrative Officer under former County Executive Rushern Baker III, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, and Executive Director of Baltimore County's Department of Economic Development, Iannucci built a reputation as someone who understood that successful economic development requires both vision and attention to detail. Iannucci also served as Chief Legislative Officer under former Governor William Donald Schaefer.

A graduate of the University of Maryland College Park and the University of Maryland School of Law, Iannucci has always maintained deep roots in the community he serves. As a long-time Prince George's County resident and member of the Maryland Economic Development Association Hall of Fame and Maryland Regional Manufacturing Star, his commitment to the region extends far beyond professional duty.

Iannucci has placed attention on addressing economic mobility, equity in federal spending in the DMV, and Maryland's economic competitiveness. As PGCEDC prepares for this transition, the organization remains committed to advancing its vision of inclusive economic prosperity.

REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES $1 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR COMMERCIAL PROPERTY IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES $1 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR COMMERCIAL PROPERTY IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

Largo, MD --- The Redevelopment Authority of Prince George's County (RDA) announced today that $1 million in funding is available through the Commercial Property Improvement Program (CPIP) and applications for funding are now being accepted. Applications are available starting today, October 21, 2024, and the deadline to submit the application is December 9, 2024, by 12:00 p.m. The CPIP was established to assist owners of shopping centers and retail street storefronts properties with improving exterior facade, place making, lighting, and major building systems improvements that enhance retail competitiveness and viability.

“We are excited to announce this year’s round of Commercial Property Improvement Program funds,” said County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. “Economic development has been a key priority throughout my administration. These types of grants are crucial in supporting our growing business community and our overall efforts to strengthen Prince George’s. Through this grant opportunity, we are able to support the revitalization of shopping centers and other retail spaces, which will attract new businesses to the County and create jobs for Prince Georgians right here at home.”

The CPIP will require a 50% applicant match for all program funding awarded to approved shopping centers and retail space for eligible improvements. Therefore, applicants must be able to pay for half of the total project cost in order to apply for the CPIP funding. The minimum grant is $50,000 for $100,000 in total project costs and the maximum grant is $350,000 for $700,000 or more in total project costs.

The goal is to select applicants with the strongest market potential for investment. Commercial space occupied exclusively by places of worship or non-retail uses will not be funded. Shopping center owners who were the recipients of the 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 or 2023 CPIP funding are not eligible to apply for this year’s funding.

While CPIP will reimburse up to 50% of approved construction costs as costs are incurred and documented, architectural design and permit costs will not be reimbursed until after construction is completed. In addition, construction on the approved project must begin within 90 days after grant approval and must be completed within 180 days after approval. Incomplete submissions will not be accepted.

The CPIP Notice of Funding, application, and responses to questions can be found on the RDA website: https://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/departments-offices/redevelopment-authority/grants/commercial-property-improvement-program.
